Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
